Gravwell Prerelease Party at Epic Loot Games & Comics

By Sara Erickson

Gravwell: Escape from the 9th Dimension is releasing everywhere on Friday Dec. 20th! In preparation for the launch, the designer, Corey Young and his home store, Epic Loot Games and Comics, teamed up to host a prerelease event last weekend. They had so much fun that they sent us a story about their party.  Enjoy!

Epic Loot Games & Comics, Dayton, Ohio

As every gamer and comic book lover knows, a good origin is a necessary part of any worthwhile story.  This is the tale of not only the origin of a game, but of a designer’s journey towards his dream.

We met Corey Young not long after opening Epic Loot, at about the same time that he was working on breaking into game design, and we knew right away that we wanted to support his efforts in any way we could. Corey began running regular playtest sessions at Epic Loot, for several different games. Gravwell: Escape from the 9th Dimension became the first of those games to be picked up by a publisher - the fine folks at Cryptozoic. We at Epic Loot can tell you, having playtested several other of Corey's games, in various stages of development... be on the lookout for more innovative games from this new and exciting game designer! Corey has a unique vision, and isn't just repeating what's been done before... he's creating entirely new kinds of game mechanics!

Epic Loot Games & Comics (Dayton, Ohio) held the Gravwell: Escape From the 9th Dimension pre-release event with the game’s designer, Corey Young on December 14, 2013.  By any measure, it was a rousing success!!!

We started the event late on a day that was gray, gloomy and snowy - we weren't sure how many people would brave the poor weather.  We had set aside our 1500 square feet card hall for the event, and Corey was on hand to autograph copies of the game and modify the rules so the owner always gets to go first!!!  We opened a few copies of the game so Corey could demo and set out a signup sheet to run the first ever Gravwell tournament!

Then the people started arriving, and it turned out that the weather didn't hold them back!

Total number of people who attended the event:  32

Number of people in the tournament:  20

James Pope rocketed to first place of the Gravwell tournament and he walked away with a signed free copy of the game, Dave Center swung into second. Everyone loved the game and had a great time.  Some were even kind enough to leave us with some quotes about the game:

"Gravwell has a flexibility that you don't often see in boardgames... it can play as a simple light game for those who prefer to embrace the chaos, or as a more thinky game for those who prefer multiple levels of option analysis ("What do I need to do? What does he need to do? What do *I* need to do, to react to what he is going to do?" etc).”,  Scott C.

“We had a great time at the Gravwell pre-release party!  The game itself is a topsy turvy race where anyone can catch up and no one can run away with the lead.  My wife and I were at the edge of our seats as we leap-frogged out of the singularity!”, Michael

“Gravwell has easy to learn rules but a depth of strategy that surprises and keeps you coming back for more.”, Newman

“This game combines strategy and fun.  I love how you have to get inside your enemy’s mind to propel yourself to the warp gate.  I can’t wait to teach my friends to play!  This game is simply a stroke of genius!!  I could never think up anything so fun!!”, Emily S.

“I really, really like this game.  A lot.”, Steve A.

“An excellent game that’s part puzzle and part “Take That!”.  Great fun!”,  Steve M.

“This game is fun, creative, competitive and overall … awesome!”  Wyatt T.

Lots of happy gamers, enjoying Gravwell

Players enjoyed the game play mechanics as well as the graphic design and the miniatures. Gravwell is certainly a very well rounded game!

We were so happy that we were given the opportunity to run this event and see Corey take his game all the way from rough draft prototype to finished game. It’s such an accomplishment and we’ve had a blast sharing in the journey.
