PAXing in the Fun

By Miranda Charsky

Twice a year, Penny Arcade Expo brings people together for the best of times. A time when companies show off upcoming releases. A time when gamers and swine flu get all nice and cozy.  A time when camera flashes go off excitedly whenever Mike and Jerry from Penny Arcade hit the floor. And a time when, inevitably, you will see lots of folks cosplaying as their favorite fantasy characters. As Cryptozoic was little more than a few guys with a plan last March, this was our inaugural visit to the magic that is PAX East and we were excited to be a part of the fun!

To say that we here at Cryptozoic love Penny Arcade would be an understatement. Our largest wall mural in the office was commissioned by none other than Mike Krahulik himself. Inside the bright yellow Unicorn Meadow, the R&D team works on perfecting the art of zombie killing, harnessing the power of the Lich King, and determining if breakfast really is the most important meal of the day.

So, the folks here at Cryptozoic flew across the continent, braved the frigid temperatures of Boston, survived lunatic taxi drivers, and worked tirelessly to put together a show that would bring some excitement to the Penny Arcade community.

Our presence at PAX East was split into two sections: our booth and the Organized Play area. Our floor booth was packed with people across all three days. Players queued up for the Class Starter Deck show special, as well as our other product offerings.

If you were new to the game, you could get a demo from some of our lovely product specialists or staff members.

One of our favorite things about conventions is getting a chance to meet fans (new and old) and talk about what it is like to work at Cryptozoic, why we love to do what we do, and help people get an idea of what goes on behind the curtain!

While the booth is an awesome place to spend time during hall hours, the Organized Play area in the Table Top hall is where all the fun is had after hours! From Beginner’s Tournaments to Spectral Safaris, playing in the League or drafting for an iPod, there  is something there for everyone!

If you ventured over to the Organized Play area, you were bound to see the PAX East attendees lined up to see Landro, visiting all the way from Booty Bay in Stranglethorn Vale! It didn’t hurt his popularity that he was giving away World of Warcraft® TCG Loot™ to each PAX East attenedee, just for coming to see him and his treasure chest.

On Sunday, Drew Walker was a guest panelist on the Raid Warning panel doing a live recording of their next podcast. It was a great chance for him to reach out to their listeners and talk a little about Cryptozoic and the World of Warcraft® TCG! Cryptozoic also gave out some swag to a few lucky audience members. Everyone involved had a really awesome time; we hope you will check them out in the future, and be sure to check in with us at any of the events in the future to see what sort of panels we’ll be involved with!

And to make him a real “belle of the ball,” Drew was also interviewed by the guys over at LoreHound, who were excited to talk to the lead designer on one of our most popular products at PAX East, Assault on Icecrown Citadel! This was a great opportunity for Drew to offer unique insight into the design and development on the brand new four-player game. Assault on Icecrown Citadel is a great way for new players to experience the game, as everything you need is included in one box! Wildly popular, everyone here at Cryptozoic encourages interested players to check their local hobby stores for a copy, as we were all sold out at the convention!

The most exciting thing that happened at the show was the early announcement of The Lookouts game that Cryptozoic Entertainment will be releasing in partnership with Penny Arcade! An intriguing hybrid of a board game and role playing game, The Lookouts is a great adventure for anyone looking to get lost in the forest!

But, that’s not all Cryptozoic has in store for the Penny Arcade community! We’ll also be creating a deck building game based on the beloved characters from the webcomic, and releasing an entire original digital comic of The Lookouts. Fans should check back with us regularly, and be sure to stop by our booth at PAX Prime in Seattle. This time we'll be PAX veterans and we hope to be have even bigger announcements for the PAX attendees! We hope to see you then!
