SPIEL 2012 is Coming

By Mike Rosenberg

There are many big conventions held throughout the year for gaming. The Penny Arcade Expos are a celebration of all things gaming, with an emphasis on video games. Origins in Columbus highlights multiple days of hobby game action, and Gen Con in Indianapolis is called the best four days of gaming for a reason.

But there's one convention that is held each year that is known as the biggest. A gaming convention that surpassed 150,000 guests last year. It's a convention that is made for publishers, designers, and consumers, and it is host to all sorts of board games, card games, and role-playing games.

I'm referring to the Internationale Spieltage, SPIEL, held in Essen, Germany every October. It is the largest convention in the world for hobby gaming.

SPIEL 2012 is taking place from October 18 to October 21, and will feature four days of classic games, card games, tabletop action, and plenty of new and exciting stuff for kids and adults to check out. The convention is also the place for new games to take center-stage in an environment that features industry professionals as well as the public.

SPIEL attracts many visitors, exhibitors, and reporters so that they can try out popular games, shop around for new ones, and see what is coming from within the game industry. For game fans, it's a chance to meet other avid gamers from all over the world and is a massive playground of the latest games. For exhibitors, it's a platform in which to interact with customers on the show floor.

SPIEL 2012 also plays host to the Deutscher Spiele Preis, one of the most prestigeous awards given out in the indutry each year. It is often awarded to games for gamers, and highlights innovative and creative game design. The 4-time winner of the Deutsche Spiele Preis has been Reiner Knizia, and we're thrilled to have him designing one of our upcoming games: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey board game, set for release next year.

If you're looking to see just how many people love games, SPIEL 2012 is the place to be. The big convention kicks off next week!
