Batman: The Dark Knight Returns — The Game is a solo board game experience in which you don the cape and cowl and journey through Frank Miller’s iconic comic book series. Instead of traditional leveling up, this is a game of attrition. As Batman, you must come out of retirement and do everything you can to beat back a relentless tide of ruthless mutants, cops, and press looking to bring you down. Get ready to face villains like Two-Face, The Joker, and the leader of the Mutant Gang… as well as your powerful former ally, Superman!

The game is played over the course of four epic “Books,” with the results of each carrying over to the next. Each Book features unique rules, allies, abilities, and epic boss battles. You can also play each Book standalone, with setup instructions for easy, normal, and hard modes. There’s even a VS Mode that lets one player take control of Batman’s enemies.

The game is offered in a regular edition and a Deluxe Edition featuring 17 miniature figures designed in the distinct Frank Miller art style of the comic!

Not sure if playing as 2 player would be good, but as a solo game it’s ok. I wish each book was more different than the last. It may be considered easy by hardcore gamers but I think it’s a good idea to err on the side of easy as it is easier to add difficulty. I played some of the hard mode and rage quit over the swinginess. A game can be easy but fun and you can take chances while a game too difficult can sour you to the experience. Their are a couple rules added on to each book that are unnecessary. This will result in many forgetting rules as they go on. For example in book 2 when you add mutants to the board at the end of your turn you are supposed to add them to the clue spots of your choice or as close to those spots. You’ll forget this and this is one rule that shouldn’t even exist. Mind you that rules do pile on each book and for a solo game I think they are too many. At least too many that depend on the circumstance. This coupled with a not very good rule book can put some off.

Played the solo book missions on hard, rules for this is online or in the deluxe version, and can see the cracks in the game. In the regular game I had goals completed and never took on a riot. In these missions goals are practically non existent and fighting is horrible. In the main game you have high health tracks to resist anything the mutant leader dishes out, in this you can see how his dice and powers make him ridiculous. You’re Batman but feel like Alfred donning the Batman outfit. This limits the replay ability of this game since raising the difficult results in the swingy-ness of the random elements exponentially becoming a problem.
If you have never read the graphic novel please do so before playing. The animated 2 part movies are adequate but shouldn’t be watched before reading the graphic novel.
